Find out how Googlebot works to better understand SEO and better optimize the SEO of your website.
With around 40 million unique visitors per month in France, Google is spraying the competition. And for good reason, its market share continues to nibble its historical rivals, Yahoo and Bing. It is today more than 90% in India.
So yes, Google, we use it every day. But how exactly does the Mountain View firm, which for years has been in pole position on the famous Big Four of technology companies (Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon)? We will approach this topic together to clarify its mode of operation and try to understand the action and operation of his robot. But first of all, what exactly is a search engine? Because, yes, it’s more than just a home page … and for good reason! It is an online service that allows users to find digital resources such as web pages, images, videos or forums and social networks. It is the edition of keywords on a search engine that allows to find these pages. This is possible thanks to the meticulous work of a software robot commonly called “Crawler”. His role ? Browse the web and constantly archive the pages found within its index of referencing. The crawler of Google, which is certainly the best known, is called “Googlebot” but there are others like the Bingbot Bing for example.
To be able to work properly, the first step is to collect the data. This is called the crawl stage. Googlebot will explore the Internet by visiting the web pages and the links that are there to gather all the data possible. For this first phase, it’s important to understand that Googlebot – like all crawlers – tends to visit sites with original content more frequently. Propose “new” allows a website to attract robots more frequently and, therefore, to have more chance to reference its page on the search engine. It is a policy based on the priority and renewal of information. This is usually shared by all search engines.
The Google database is called the index and is estimated at tens of thousands of billions of URLs. In 2010, “Caffeine” a new technical infrastructure appears at Google and brings some novelties above all related to the acceleration of the Index (ex: the news is for example integrated only a few minutes after their publications). Indexing is therefore in progress when the data Googlebot collects during its analysis is studied and organized in its data centers. Indeed, Google will classify these in its “Main Index” while the keywords that may correspond to the URLs of these pages will be classified in its “Index inverted”. This index has an essential role since it makes it possible to determine the number of times a keyword appears in one page relative to another page and, therefore, to associate it with it. This is of course not a unique condition to referencing this page but, nevertheless, a relatively important criterion.
Once the indexing of a web page is completed, the goal is to link the relevant keywords that correspond to the latter and, of course, direct users to it according to their requests. This is the phase of data processing and ranking. Many criteria are necessary for this, but they nevertheless meet three major categories: there is the quality of the traffic and the behavior of this audience on the site (time spent on the site, number of pages visited etc.), the relevance pages of the site with the quality of the published keywords, their weight and its link with the search of the surfer. Finally, Google also takes into account the success of your website in terms of Backlink (link published on an external site to yours) both quantitatively and qualitatively. This is a great way to measure the popularity of your website.
